"My mother's memories and dreams, imagined through my daughter, her granddaughter, my muse"

JUANA'S ODYSSEY

More than 80 photo series, hundreds of photo-paintings, and over 20 short films make up this revolutionary work, which is condensed in the virtual museum odiseadejuana.com, a vast, mysterious, and musical virtual labyrinth created by Alicia Christov.

This fascinating collection of works will be exhibited starting November 28th for a period of 3 months at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Oaxacan Cultures, MACCO, a nerve center for art in Mexico and Latin America.

Juana's Odyssey is a project by Alicia Christov originally inspired by the life of Joanna I of Castile, "The Mad," and born in 2006 as a reaction to the sudden death of her mother. Alicia's daughter, Indiana, would act for many years in the role of the protagonist of the Odyssey, starting from when the more than one hundred photo series that would later be used by Alicia as her palette in what she calls photo-paintings and in her short films began to be taken.

The Odyssey has 4 pillars: the more than 80 photo series taken in Mexico, Spain, and Belgium; the hundreds of photo-paintings, including the spectacular Joanna's Altar and the Dream of the Dance of the Twelve Princesses; the short films, among them the monologue Joanna Speaks, Kill Them, DMT Paradise, and Goggle Mansion, where she makes use of video, animation, and AI in a novel way; and the audiovisual, artisanal, and vast Virtual Museum of Juana's Odyssey.

Juana's Odyssey is a project dedicated to the martyr and political prisoner Joanna I, and to all the forgotten prisoners of the mistreatment and betrayals of history. Joanna I is the mother and threshold, never recognized, of the modern age, of the age of the Conquest, of the empire of her son Charles V and, in the Odyssey, transformed into an "Uberhuman," a human being who traverses time and space, through a dreamlike, contemporary, and historical landscape of fire, flood, waste, repression, love, sex, rape, and imprisonment, to finally find a home and inner peace, like Homer's Odysseus. Juana's Odyssey speaks of mourning, motherhood, beauty and love, abuse and violence, hallucinogens as a journey to the mystical, the forgotten of history, and, in short, of the existential drama of all humans in our devastated world from the unusual perspective of a woman, Joanna I.
